The Shotgun fire, located in the Golden Trout Wilderness where Shotgun Creek flows into the Little Kern River has grown to 478 acres. The fire is being managed by 89 firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service. The Golden Trout Wilderness, managed by the Forest Service, is located approximately 25 miles northeast of the city of Porterville. The Shotgun fire is the first example in the Golden Trout Wilderness of the Forest Service implementing its new fire policy. The east side of the Shotgun fire is being managed to improve wildlife and fisheries habitat, improve forest health, and reduce the unnatural accumulation of forest fuels (dead branches, pine needles and underbrush.) The Forest Service is allowing the Shotgun fire to play its natural role in the shaping of the Sierra Nevada forests and reducing the chance of more severe fires in the future. The Grouse Fire in Yosemite National Park is approximately 2,300 acres. It is located south of Yosemite Valley and north of Glacier Point Rd. The fire continues moving toward the established management boundary. Please expect brief road delays along Wawona Road, (Hwy 41) and/or Glacier Point Road. Smoky conditions exist late evening and early morning in the park and surrounding areas. All park facilities are open.
The Harden Fire started June 8 by lightning and is approximately 1,594 acres. This acreage is 90 percent of the anticipated acreage that managers planned for the incident. The fire is located 13 miles north of Yosemite Valley, west of Harden Lake and within the 1996 Ackerson fire perimeter. Closures are in place for public safety. Little growth is expected. The fire is not out and will continue to burn within the established boundaries for some time.
Fire crews plan to begin ignitions on the Hart Prescribed Fire in Kings Canyon National Park on July 5th, weather and air quality conditions permitting. This unit is located in the Redwood Mountain Grove along the west side of Generals Highway. The project area is located approximately one mile south of the Kings Canyon Overlook.
